Embalming Services in Hyderabad — What It Is, When It Is Needed, and What to Expect

By Dr. Nagavenkata Prasad Rao··6 min read

Embalming is the process of using chemical solutions to treat a deceased body and slow natural decomposition. While it has been practised for centuries, modern embalming uses a combination of preservative fluids (typically formaldehyde-based) that are introduced into the arterial system. The result is that the body can be preserved in a presentable condition for 7–15 days, significantly longer than without any treatment.

In India, embalming is not mandatory for all funerals. However, it is required in specific situations: when the body is being transported by air (all Indian and international airlines require an embalming certificate for accepting human remains as cargo), when relatives are travelling from abroad and the funeral needs to be delayed by several days, or when the death has occurred due to trauma or illness that has affected the appearance of the body.

The embalming process typically takes 2–4 hours and is carried out by trained embalmers at the home, hospital or a private facility. It involves cleaning and disinfecting the body, replacing the circulatory fluid with preservative solution, and closing the body cavity. The face is carefully restored to a peaceful, natural appearance.

After embalming, an embalming certificate is issued by the licensed embalmer. This certificate is mandatory when booking air cargo for body transport at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad (RGIA). Along with the embalming certificate, airlines also require a zinc-lined coffin, the original death certificate, NOC from police (for unnatural deaths), and identification documents.

Our team at Hyderabad Funeral Services provides professional embalming by certified embalmers, the complete embalming certificate for airline compliance, and coordination with the cargo terminal at RGIA. We also assist with the zinc coffin procurement and all paperwork for smooth air transport to any city in India or abroad.
