A dead body freezer box (also called a mortuary box or embalming unit) is a portable refrigeration unit used to preserve a body at home when relatives are travelling from outstation or abroad. It allows families to delay the funeral until all near and dear ones have arrived.
The freezer box operates at temperatures between -2°C and +4°C, which effectively slows decomposition. With a properly functioning freezer box, a body can be preserved for 3 to 7 days at home. For longer preservation, hospital morgue facilities or embalming may be recommended.
Modern freezer boxes have 4-side transparent glass panels, allowing the family to view the body without opening the unit. They run on standard 220V household power (like a regular refrigerator) and consume approximately 250–350 watts of electricity.
