Hindu Funeral Rites in Hyderabad — A Complete Guide to Antim Sanskar

By Suresh Kumar Reddy··8 min read

When a loved one passes away, the family is suddenly faced with a series of rituals that must be performed correctly and with dignity. Hindu funeral rites, known as Antim Sanskar or Antyesti, are among the most important sacraments in Sanatan Dharma. In Hyderabad — with its large Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and North Indian Hindu population — these rites are practised with slight regional variations but with the same reverence.

The funeral process typically begins with Snaana (bathing of the body), followed by the draping of a white shroud. The body is then placed on a bier decorated with flowers and garlands. A lamp (diya) is placed near the head, and the Pandit chants mantras while the family prays.

The procession to the cremation ground (shamashan) is conducted by close male relatives. In Hyderabad, popular cremation grounds include Mettuguda, Secunderabad Municipal Crematorium, and LB Nagar Crematorium. After cremation, the ashes (asthi) are collected and immersed in the Godavari river at Rajahmundry or Pushkar Ghat in Haridwar.

Post-funeral rites include the Terahvi (13th day ceremony), Masik Shraddh, and annual Pitru Paksha rituals. Our pandits are experienced in all these traditions and coordinate everything so the family can focus on grieving.
